AI Employee

An autonomous agent trained on a company's specific processes that performs work alongside human teammates.

An AI employee is different from a chatbot or a workflow automation. It reads from and writes to your actual business tools (CRM, helpdesk, messaging, docs), makes decisions within scoped permissions, and routes high-stakes actions to a human for approval. Unlike generic AI assistants, an AI employee is trained on the company's specific processes, playbooks, and data — so its output mirrors how the team actually works.

AI Agent

A software system that uses an LLM to plan, decide, and take actions through tools — not just generate text.

An AI agent uses a large language model as its reasoning engine but extends beyond text generation: it can call APIs, query databases, browse the web, send messages, and chain these actions together to complete multi-step tasks. When an AI agent is scoped to a persistent role with defined responsibilities and access, it becomes an AI employee.

Custom AI Agent

An AI agent built and trained specifically for one company's workflows, data, and tools — not a generic template.

Custom AI agents differ from off-the-shelf agent platforms in three ways: (1) they're trained on your specific processes and tone, (2) they integrate with your exact tool stack rather than a limited catalog, and (3) they include business-specific guardrails, approval flows, and escalation paths. Custom AI agents typically outperform generic agents on domain-specific tasks because context matters more than model size for narrow work.

Agentic AI

A category of AI systems that take autonomous action to achieve goals, not just respond to prompts.

Agentic AI describes AI systems that exhibit agency: planning multi-step work, using tools, maintaining state across interactions, and making decisions within their authority. Traditional AI answers questions. Agentic AI completes tasks. The category includes single-agent systems (one AI performing a role) and multi-agent systems (multiple AI agents collaborating).

AI Implementation

The end-to-end process of bringing an AI system from idea to production use inside a business.

AI implementation includes discovery (identifying high-ROI opportunities), architecture (model selection, integration design, data access), build (configuration, training on company data, tool wiring), deployment (rollout across channels your team actually uses), and change management (team enablement, monitoring, optimization). Most AI projects fail at implementation — not because the model is wrong, but because integration and adoption aren't treated with the same rigor as the model choice.

AI Integration

The work of connecting AI agents to a company's existing tools, APIs, and data systems.

AI integration is what turns a chatbot into a coworker. Without integration, an AI can only generate text. With integration, it can read the CRM, update the helpdesk, post to Slack, and send email. AI Automation

Human-in-the-Loop (HITL)

A design pattern where AI systems pause for human review or approval on sensitive actions.

Human-in-the-loop is how production AI balances speed with safety. The AI handles the 90% of work that's routine; for the 10% that involves risk — sending money, making irreversible decisions, communicating with VIPs — it requests a human's approval before proceeding. Well-designed HITL systems log every decision for audit and refine themselves from human corrections over time.

Large Language Model (LLM)

A foundation AI model trained on vast text data that powers most modern AI agents and employees.

LLMs like Claude, GPT-4, and Gemini are the reasoning engines behind modern AI systems. They don't store a company's data or run workflows by themselves — they're the intelligence layer that AI agents and AI employees plug into. The model alone isn't enough; production AI requires integration, context, guardrails, and orchestration on top of the LLM.

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)

A technique that grounds AI responses in a company's specific documents and data.

RAG is how AI systems answer questions about proprietary information without retraining the model. The system first retrieves relevant passages from a company's documents (policies, knowledge base, past emails), then passes those passages to the LLM along with the question. RAG keeps answers accurate and current, and lets companies update the AI's knowledge just by updating the source documents.

Model Context Protocol (MCP)

An open protocol for connecting AI models to tools, data sources, and services.

MCP is emerging as the standard way for AI agents to discover and use tools. Instead of writing custom integrations per model and per tool, teams expose their systems through an MCP server, and any MCP-compatible AI can use them. For businesses, this means faster integration, less lock-in to a single vendor's agent framework, and a cleaner path as models improve over time.

Multi-Agent System

An AI architecture where multiple specialized agents collaborate to complete complex work.

In a multi-agent system, each agent handles a narrow responsibility — one drafts emails, one updates the CRM, one summarizes meetings — and they coordinate via a shared workflow. Multi-agent systems tend to outperform single generalist agents on complex, multi-step tasks because specialization lets each agent have tighter prompts, better tooling, and clearer evaluation.

Vertical AI

AI products built for a specific industry or function, with deep domain expertise baked in.

Vertical AI contrasts with horizontal AI (general-purpose tools). A vertical AI product for law firms understands contracts, conflict checks, and billable hours by default. Vertical AI typically outperforms horizontal AI inside its niche because the training data, guardrails, and integrations are all tailored to the domain.

AI Orchestration

The coordination layer that decides which AI agent or tool runs when, for which task.

AI orchestration is the control plane for multi-agent systems. It routes incoming work to the right agent based on content and context, manages handoffs between agents, applies rate limits and guardrails, and logs everything for observability. Good orchestration is the difference between a clever demo and a system that reliably runs in production.

Prompt Engineering

The practice of crafting instructions that elicit reliable, high-quality output from an LLM.

Prompt engineering is part art, part science. Effective prompts specify the role, provide context, show examples of good output, and constrain the format. In production AI, prompt engineering has shifted from one-shot tricks to systematic prompt libraries — versioned, tested against evaluation sets, and updated as models evolve. AI Coworker

A colloquial term for an AI employee — an AI system that works alongside humans as a teammate.
